Health & Diet
The Mediterranean Diet, well known for its health benefits, is often associated with longevity. The principal aspects of this diet include high olive oil consumption, high consumption of unrefined cereals, fruits and vegetables, moderate consumption of dairy products (mostly as cheese and yogurt) fish and wine and also low consumption of meat and meat products.

Olive oil contains a group of natural elements, such as phenols, oleic acid, vitamin E, carotenoids and oleuropein, with potent antioxidant properties, leading to a healthier heart and lower “bad” cholesterol. This could, at least in part, explain the lower incidence of heart diseases in regions where olive oil and olives are consumed on a daily basis.
Clinical studies suggest that a higher proportion of monounsaturated fats (in which extra virgin olive oil is considerably rich) in the diet is associated with a reduction of the risk of coronary heart disease, and that it exerts anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, antihypertensive as well as vaso-dilatory effects.

It is also known to lower blood sugar levels and blood pressure. Research also indicates that olive oil prevents peptic ulcers and is effective in treatment of peptic ulcer disease, and may also be a factor in preventing cancer.
